Oktoberfest

What is it all about

The Oktoberfest, or ‘Wies’n’ as the locals callit started way back on October 12th 1810. Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen and celebrated the wedding with a horse race in a field outside the city. The citizens were invited to attend and was the beginning of what has grown to be the biggest beer festival on the planet!

There are now some 14 beer tents with all the major local breweries represented, as well as 21 smaller tents that also serve schnapps and wine.

The whole site is 103 acres and the beer tents have a total sitting capacity of over 98,000. In 2012 they served over 6.9 million litres of beer to 6.4 million visitors over the 16 days of the festival!

What happens

Across three weekends visitors head into the beer grounds to enjoy the festivities, often dressed in the local attire! Many visitors to the festival like to buy local dress of Dirndls and Leiderhousen which can be purchased at various shops around the city. The beer halls can be very busy so we recommend to get in early to get a seat and a waitress will serve you at your table. Umpah bands will entertain you and your friends and the atmosphere is unbelievable as tourists and locals sing and ‘Prost’ to enjoy the liveliest three weeks in Munich’s calendar.

Our information guide you receive when you book at trip has lots of tips and information to help you make the most of your time in Munich.

How to get there

The best way to get to Munich is by flying directly into the city’s airport. A number of companies offer budget flights from London to Munich all year round. Once you've booked on the trip, we have detailed instructions in your pre departure information of how to get to our campsite or hostel.

However, as the festival gets closer, often flight prices increase. For those who would like to save on costs, there is the option to fly into Friedrichshafen or Salzburg airports and then get a direct train to Munich which will take about 2½ to 4 hours.  Alternatively, Memmingen airport has public transport links to get you to Munich to enjoy the festival.
