The tomato fight of La Tomatina has been a tradition in Buñol since about 1944 or 1945. However, no one is entirely sure of the exact history of this world-famous event! What we do know is that in 1980 the city council took charge of the organisation of La Tomatina. The council now provides the tomatoes, each year more than the previous, and thanks to international media coverage more and more visitors have been attracted to the event each year.
Now anywhere from 10,000 to 40,000 people come to throw over 100,000 tonnes of tomatoes each year, temporarily boosting Buñol's tiny population of only about 9,000 people!
In the hours leading up to the start of the tomato battle thousands of people cram into the narrow streets in the small town of Buñol. As it nears closer to 11am goggles are secured, swimming caps put in place, the first cracker sounds and five trucks full to the brim with tomatoes push through the heaving crowds, dumping literally thousands of tonnes of tomatoes in the middle of the streets to start the tomato fight.
The tomato fight lasts for one hour, which may not sound like very long, but certainly seems it when getting pelted by tomatoes! There are council rules and guidelines for being involved in the tomato fight and our Topdeck information booklet provides you with heaps of hints and tips.
