This incredible beer festival in Bavaria, Germany, is the biggest European festival of the year and runs from mid-September to early October. Enjoy the world's best beer, great food and a carnival atmosphere! Topdeck offer a great range of Oktoberfest trips and have over 30 years' experience at 'Beerfest', so you can expect professionally-run trips which don't skimp on quality.
We've got an Oktoberfest package for everyone; make your own way to Munich, or join one of our overnight coach trips from London. Camp out at the Topdeck campgsite, or enjoy centrally located hostel or hotel accommodation in the heart of the city.
The Oktoberfest, or Wies'n as the locals call it, started in Munich way back on 12 October, 1810. Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen and celebrated the wedding with a horse race in a field outside the city. The citizens were invited to attend, and from these humble beginnings the biggest beer festival on the planet developed!
There are now 14 beer tents with all the major local breweries represented, as well as 21 smaller tents which also serve schnapps and wine.
The whole site is a massive 103 acres and the beer tents have a total sitting capacity of 100,000. In 2012 they served over 6.9 million litres of beer to 6.4 million visitors over the 16 days of the festival!
Over the fortnight millions of locals and visitors alike will head to the beer grounds to enjoy the festivities. Many visitors from out of town like to adopt traditional Bavarian dress and purchase dirndls (spectacular long dresses for women) or lederhosen (nifty leather trousers for men) to get in the spirit. Both can be easily purchased at various shops around Munich.
The beer halls can be very busy so we recommend you get in early to get a seat and a waitress will serve you at your table. 'Oompah' bands will entertain the merry drinkers and the atmosphere is unbelievable as tourists and locals sing together and exchange greetings of "prost" (cheers). It's certainly the liveliest two weeks in Munich's calendar!
When you book a trip with Topdeck we'll give you an information guide full of tips and information to help you make the most of your time in Munich.
If you choose a make your own way trip, the best way to get to Munich is by flying directly into the city's airport. A number of companies offer budget flights from London to Munich all year round. Once you've booked on the trip, we have detailed instructions in your pre-departure information of how to get to our campsite or hostel.
However flight prices direct to Munich increase as the festival gets closer, so for those who would like to save on costs, there is the option to fly into Friedrichshafen or Salzburg airports and then get a direct train to Munich which will take about 2½ to 4 hours. Alternatively, Memmingen airport has public transport links to get you to Munich to enjoy the festival.
But that's not all – Topdeck also offer a number of return coach trips from London, which included overnight transport in a modern Topdeck coach. If you're on a budget and looking to save your hard-earned cash for the beer halls themselves, then these may just be the perfect choice for you!
