If you’ve ever been to Bali, you’ll know that it’s basically paradise on Earth – thanks to the whitest sand, the bluest water, tropical wildlife and consistent sunshine. Every time I go back I just fall in love all over again.
A few weeks back I had the opportunity to go to Bali with Topdeck- and I’m glad I did as I can honestly say it was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. We had some crazy experiences including mountain biking and playing with monkeys, but one of the best was definitely snorkelling around the Gili Islands.
The Gili islands are three tiny islands just off Bali, which, until 30 years ago, were uninhabited. Go back to those visions of Bali as the whitest sand, bluest water and beating sun … and multiple them by 10. So you know I went in with high expectations and believe me it didn’t disappoint.
Waking up so early on day four of the trip really wasn’t easy, but I was assured it would be worth it, and oh my God it really was. Our ride out there was insane- you could see for miles, like literally miles into the distance, and it was so sunny! It was super relaxing just being on the boat, but being in a group meant that everyone was super excited by the time we arrived to our first snorkelling spot which was great. The idea of swimming in open water was a bit scary, so I got a bit nervous, but being in a group really helped get the excitement levels up!
Our local guide was really great, so we just put on the gear, grabbed my camera and jumped in…
After the initial shock of being in water that’s so clear and warm, you begin to realise that you’re literally surrounded by fish in every colour imaginable- it was beyond what we’d been told to expect. There were so many fish, in so many crazy colours and sizes that completely surrounded the whole group, it was incredible! And we even saw turtles, which was just insane- it reminded me of Finding Nemo. We went to three separate snorkelling spots, which just kept getting better with more fish, and more coral. By the end of the day we couldn’t stop talking about what we’d just done- it’s definitely going to stay with me for a long time.
The best bit was definitely the fish feeding as we got to get so close to all the fish- something you definitely can’t do in the UK. It was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done and would 100% recommend it to anyone who loves travelling. With the early start, it was great that it was completely organised for us, so we could just sit back, swim and enjoy the whole incredible experience. It’s definitely one I’ve ticked off the bucket list and I can’t wait for the next one!
