Where old and new Croatia collide. On the hunt for things to do in Split? Visit Diocletian’s Palace. It’s where Daenerys kept her pet dragons. St. Domnius Cathedral with its talllll bell tower – whip those calves into shape to feel like you're on top of the world. Palm trees, white-washed buildings and bright lights mean one thing. Nope, you’re not gonna appear in LA. Riva is where it’s at. Head to Split beach to witness the dawn of a brand-new day. One word: unmissable.

Hvar is a hot spot and we’re not just talking about the 2,843 hours of sunshine it gets per year. Sweet things to do in Hvar? Catch a tan at one of Hvar beaches. Top tip: the pebblier the beach, the less crowded it’ll be. Taste allll the wine at one of the Hvar island vineyards. Winemaking here goes back to 384 BC! Jump ship and head to Blue Cave. A spot that feels like it’s world’s away from reality. Your worries are about to disappear as quick as someone getting cancelled.

This Croatian landing is a medieval treasure trove waiting to be cracked open. Get lost in the old city of Dubrovnik aka “The Pearl of the Adriatic”. Things to discover? Captivating back streets. Gothic churches. Gleaming marble floors. UNESCO World Heritage site – done. Wanna overlook Dubrovnik from above? We can’t promise any fire-breathing creatures, but Mount Srd is the spot to see EVERYTHING. A top way to get up there? Forget using your legs and hop on a cable car instead.

Mljet is a piece of paradise you wanna be deserted on. Explore Mljet National Park. Visit Sveta Marija – a small island home to a 12th century monastery. Say hey to the friendly locals and grab a local snack for the trip back. Gotta keep those energy levels high! Especially before you trek to Odysseus Cave. Turquoise waters. Striking rock faces. A home fit for a nymph. It’s a place of WONDER. Worked up a sweat? Catch some rays at one of Mljet beaches. You deserve it.

THINGS TO DO IN CROATIA

Your Croatia Qs answered...

What should I pack for a Croatian sailing trip?

The three BIG Ss – Sunnies, Swimmers, Sunscreen. That’s not all. Bring light and loose clothing which dries easily as well as your thongs and sneakers for when you head onto land. Aqua shoes are required for pesky (but beautiful) pebbled beaches and sea urchins. For the time you spend in the sea, a waterproof phone holder or camera is a MUST. Go the extra mile and squeeze in some inflatables for you and your crewmates to enjoy at sea too! A full list of what to pack is in your trip notes.

Is tipping customary in Croatia?

Yep – in a laidback way. In restaurants, tipping 10-15% of the bill is common – as long as it’s not included already. Cafés and bars require no more than 5-10% - telling the barista/bartender to “keep the change” is enough. For the Croatian boat crew members, a small tip of around 10 euros is acceptable. Top tip: don’t overtip – it may come across as insulting.

What public holidays are celebrated in Croatia?

Dan državnosti (Statehood Day) on 30 May celebrates the country’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1990. Dan antifašističke borbe (Anti-Fascist Struggle Day) on 22 June is an extremely important date in Croatian history. It marks the beginning of Croatia uprising against Nazi forces in 1942, leading to Europe’s most effective anti-Axis resistance during WW1. Dan pobjede i domovinske zahvalnosti i Dan hrvatskih branitelja (Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders) on 5 August commemorates Oluja (Operation Storm), the last major battle of Domovinski rat (Croatian War of Independence) in 1995 when the Croatian army liberated the city of Knin from the Serbian army.

How much money should I bring for a trip to Croatia?

It depends! You’ll need to budget for spending money, meals (only the ones which aren’t included, obvs) and Your Options. Go through your itinerary and think about the awesome activities you’re keen to experience – it’s all part of the fun!

How big are the boats on trip?

There are three boats to choose from on our Sail & Swim Croatia trips: the Leonardo, Moja Maja and Toma. The Leonardo, only used on Sail & Swim (Plus), has EXTRA space for mingling with your mates whilst the Moja Maja and Toma give cosy, rustic vibes. Head to our Sail & Swim page to see diagrams of the boats.

What kind of activities can you do while sailing?

Make a splash at swim spots. Look for local fish whilst snorkelling. Test your balance during kayaking. Enjoy sizzling BBQs on deck. Witness dreamy sunsets (and sunrises if you’re an early bird). And see alll the sights when the boat docks.

Bonus questions...

When’s the best time to travel to Croatia?

June. It’s warming up to peak summer, has regular boat trips and doesn’t come with the hefty price tag. BUT if you want to dive right into festivals, parties, and plenty of boats along the Adriatic Sea, July and August shouldn’t be missed. Make sure you dip into your savings to Experience. It. All.

Will I need a visa and/or travel insurance to travel to Croatia?

You must have comprehensive travel insurance to participate in a Topdeck trip to Croatia. You will be unable to join us without it.

It’s your responsibility to obtain the correct visas for your trip. Ask your travel agent or check with the relevant embassies before you depart.

Find travel advice for Australia citizens here, for New Zealand citizens here for US citizens here, for Canadian citizens here and for British citizens here. If you’re travelling from a country not listed here, head to the relevant government website for more information.

What are the health and vaccine requirements for travel to Croatia?

We recommend you consult your doctor about health and vaccination requirements before you travel to Croatia.

For current travel safety advice, please check your home country’s travel advisories.

Can I use my mobile phone whilst travelling in Croatia?

Mobile phone reception in Croatia varies. Signal is likely to be better in cities and towns than in rural areas. Remember to check your network provider’s roaming fees to avoid any nasty surprises on your next bill!

What do I need to charge my devices in Croatia?

The plug types in Croatia are Type C and F. Croatia operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

We recommend you bring a universal plug adapter – airports usually sell them, but it’s cheaper to buy one before you go.

Top tips for travelling Croatia

Always carry cash on you just in case (Euros is the currency). You’ll need a small amount to use public loos, and many restaurants, bars and cafés are cash-only. Book main attractions in advance. Pack comfy shoes for the city streets and national park pathways. For less sweaty vibes, travel in May and September.
