EUROPE FAQ

Where will my trip depart from in London?

Hotel trips (plus the Britain & Ireland and The British Isle Explorer trips) depart from:

Burns Hotel
18-26 Barkston Gardens
Earls Court
London, SW5 0EN

 020 7373 3151
The closest London Underground stop is Earls Court.
If it is more convenient, you can join your trip in Paris or Amsterdam (whichever your trip visits on Day 1). You must inform us or your travel agent at the time of booking so we know when you'll be joining the trip and give you the appropriate accommodation details.

Hostel Plus and Camping trips depart from the following hostel only if your trip code ends with a -8:

Generator London
37 Tavistock Place,
London, England,
WC1H 9SE

Festival trips:

Departure points vary between our Festival trips. Please check your detailed itinerary for departure details.

My trip doesn't start in London. Where will I join my group?

The meeting point in most cases is the joining accommodation, usually in the reception area. Please check your detailed trip itinerary for exact details.

What time is check-in?

Check-in for most trips departing from London is by 6.30am (or by 7.30am for Britain & Ireland and The British Isle trips).

Check-in times in other starting cities can vary from trip to trip. Please check your trip itinerary for details.

What time do we get back to London?

If your trip ends in London, we usually arrive between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. The drop-off point is either the Burns Hotel (for all Hotel trips, plus the Britain & Ireland and Celtic Trail Explorer trips) or Wombats hostel (for all Hostel Plus and Camping trips). Please check your itinerary carefully for exact details.
Our return time is dependent upon external factors such as traffic, ferry delays and hold-ups at British immigration. In peak summer it is possible our arrival time to London may be delayed, and throughout the year we may encounter unforeseen circumstances which could delay our arrival to London by up to several hours. For this reason we strongly recommend that you do not book flights out of London for the day your trip finishes.

How can I make a payment?

  • Call your local Topdeck Office and make payment over the phone by credit or debit card.
  • Transfer the money in to Topdeck's bank account. Please e-mail or call your Topdeck Travel Consultant for the bank details.
  • Complete a payment form with your credit or debit card details and e-mail or fax this to your Topdeck Travel Consultant.

What does my trip include?

On the right hand side of each trip page you'll be able to find two lists titled 'Bucket List Inclusions' and 'More Inclusions' which show exactly what is included in the trip price.

Each trip includes coach transport, ferry crossings (where applicable), accommodation, meals, sightseeing tours of all major stops (including some with local city guides) and 'Bucket List Inclusions' activities as specified on each individual trip page.

Each trip features the services of a Topdeck Trip Leader and Driver (except certain Explorer trips which do not have a Driver). On our Hostel Plus trips we also include the services of On Site Chefs in the Swiss Alps, Rome and Venice. On our Camping trips (and Hostel Plus trips through Scandinavia) you will also enjoy the services of a Topdeck On-Road Chef.

What is NOT included?

Your spending money, visas, personal travel insurance, medical fees, cost of optional activities and excursions, entrance fees to the various museums and sites visited (unless specified in the 'More Inclusions' section), flights, departure taxes, and any meals not specified on the trip page.

How many other people will be on the trip?

Group sizes vary from trip to trip. As a guideline, an average Hotel, Hostel Plus or Camping trip could have around 35 passengers on board, with a maximum group size of 48. Minimum numbers would not normally be below 20 passengers.

Our Explorer groups average around 16-20 passengers, with a maximum of 30.

What sort of people will be on the trip?

Topdeck passengers come from all over the world and are aged between 18 and 39. Like you, they will be up for a great travel experience and meeting like-minded travellers.

Is it a problem if I travel on my own?

Not at all! Many of our passengers travel alone – often over 50% of our passengers start the trip solo and it's a great way to meet people. What's more, we don't charge compulsory single supplements – instead we'll match you up with a roommate(s) of the same sex.

What visas will I need?

Obtaining correct visas is your own responsibility. Not having correct visas could mean you missing out on part or all of your trip. Please refer to the Visa Information section of this website (which should be used as a guide only) or ask your travel agent. You should also double check with the individual Embassies before you depart, remembering that visa requirements can change at short notice.

For most of the countries where visas are required, it is NOT possible to obtain the visa whilst on the trip and some visas take 3-4 weeks to obtain.

For trips going to Russia, Topdeck will provide invitation letters that you MUST have to obtain your visa. For this reason it is essential that you provide us with your passport details (or get your travel agent to pass them on) as soon as you book.

Do I need travel insurance?

We recommend getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy which covers you for all medical expenses (including repatriation) and any expensive items you bring away with you such as laptops, tablets, smart phones and cameras. Check the policy wording and excess limits before you book and make sure they are to your satisfaction. Travel insurance should be taken out at the time of booking in case of unforeseen events which may lead you to cancel your trip.

For more information, please visit the Travel Insurance page of this website, where you can find more tips about what to look for in a policy and search for a policy from World Nomads.

How do the Hotel trips work?

On our Hotel trips, you'll stay in a range of quality, character-filled hotels (predominantly 3-star standard). Rooms are twin or double share. If you're travelling solo, then you'll be sharing with someone of the same gender.

We've tried to avoid bland, multi-national chain hotels where possible and select smaller hotels which are more reflective of the character and vibe of the countries we visit. Our hotels are close to public transport (allowing you to get to wherever you want to go during your free time) and are as centrally located as possible. And while we can't always manage to get you right into the beating heart of a city, we can guarantee that no-one else will get you closer!

Please bear in mind that European hotel rooms may be smaller than you are used to for similar standard hotels in Australia, New Zealand, North America or Asia.

How do Hostel Plus trips work?

Our Hostel Plus trips stay in varied, multi-share accommodation. Rooms are single-sex, usually 4 people to a room. There are occasions where we stay in twin share bungalows or hotels, and other occasions where we stay in hostels with rooms which are 5 or 6 share. On very limited occasions rooms of up to 10 people may be used. Your Trip Leader will coordinate room lists during the course of the trip.

Hostel Plus trips boast accommodation ranging from modern hostels to guesthouses, bungalows, yachts and even a 12th Century Castle! In Italy, we often stay in bungalows at campsites, although calling them 'campsites' is doing them a serious disservice – it's just that 'self-contained mini resorts with unique nightlife' is a bit of a mouthful! In Paris and other selected special stopovers we use hotel upgrades for a bit of extra comfort. We always try to stay as centrally as possible and we know that no other operator can match our locations.

The exact breakdown of accommodation is detailed on each individual trip page in the 'More Inclusions' box on the right hand side.

Bedding is provided in all Hostel Plus accommodations. The only other exceptions are on the Red Star Special, Northern Exposure, Russia Scandi, Scandi Express or Scenic Scandi trips, for which you will also need to bring a sleeping bag.

I'm doing a Hostel Plus trip with my partner – will we will be able to share?

Rooms on Hostel Plus trips are booked on a single-sex basis, so couples should not expect to share. However your Trip Leader will try to room your together where possible, if the room configurations and gender breakdown of the group allows. On most trips it is possible that you will be able to share together on certain occasions.

For instance if twin share accommodation is available, such as in Rome and Venice, then you will be able to share. Also if there are other couples on the trip, it may be possible to coordinate rooms so that two or more couples can share together. This is entirely dependent on the gender breakdown of the group and is at the discretion of your Trip Leader.

How do Camping trips work?

Our Camping trips stay in dome-style tents on a twin share basis at some of Europe's best-equipped campsites. Our easy to erect dome tents are surprisingly spacious and you'll be supplied with a comfy air mattress to sleep on. You and your tent partner will erect and dismantle your own tent at each stop, but you will be given a demonstration by your Topdeck Crew on the first day of the trip.

Many of our Camping trips feature free accommodation upgrades such as hotels, hostels, yachts and an overnight ferry. These are all on a multi-share, single-sex basis, with usually 4-6 people per room.

Camping trips feature the services of a Topdeck On-Road Chef and each trip carries a spacious cook tent. All cutlery and eating utensils are supplied.

You will need to bring a sleeping bag for Camping trips.

How do Explorer trips work?

Our Explorer trips are designed for travellers who want to immerse themselves in one country or region in Europe rather than take a multi-destination trip. Our preferred accommodation style for Explorer trips is hotel (twin share / double), although our Croatia sailing boats – being traditional coastal cruisers – do not all have en-suite facilities.

We've opted for the most suitable method of transport on each trip – a traditional Croatian sailing boat, ferries in the Mediterranean, a comfortable coach in the UK and Ireland etc. Some Explorer trips use public transport where suitable. With shorter travelling days than on other trip styles, we've aimed to intersperse the journeys with interesting stops en-route.

Explorer group sizes tend to be smaller, averaging between 16 and 20 people (with a maximum of 30). All groups are accompanied by a Topdeck Trip Leader, while our Greece and Turkey programmes have specially selected local guides to escort these trips and provide added insight to the region.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Sleeping bags are required on all Camping trips.

Sleeping bags are also required on Hostel Plus trips that visit Scandinavia (Red Star Special, Northern Exposure, Russia Scandi, Scandi Express or Scenic Scandi).

Sleeping bags are not required on Hotel, Explorer and all other Hostel Plus trips.

What will I need to bring with me?

A common problem is people bringing too many things! Please refer to our suggested clothing list in the pre-departure information which you can download from the details page of your particular trip.

Oh, and don't forget your camera, passport, visas and a positive attitude! If you suffer from any medical condition please bring extra supplies of medication as it could be difficult to find in Europe.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring?

Each person is allowed 1 item of standard size luggage (backpacks only on a Camping trip) plus a day pack (and sleeping bag if required – see above). The maximum weight of your main bag must not exceed 44lbs/20kgs. Size for all bags must not exceed 70cm x 45cm x 25cm. Due to strict weight regulations for coaches in Europe, passengers whose luggage exceeds 44lbs/20kgs may be asked to offload the excess on the departure morning. In this scenario, Topdeck will not cover any storage costs which are incurred.

What about spending money?

Naturally everybody's spending varies. There are many souvenirs to be bought and a great social scene should you wish to join in! Many of your meals (including lunches on Hostel Plus & Camping trips) are included, so this really just leaves a few meals and your personal spending to budget for.

Throughout the trip, your Trip Leader will also inform you of optional activities which you can participate in, such as a gondola ride in Venice or an excursion up the Jungfrau Mountain in Switzerland. For a more detailed list and price guideline please refer to the individual trip page or your personal itinerary. Most people budget approximately €70 per day including optional activities and some souvenirs.

Do I need to change money before I leave?

We recommend that you change approximately €100 in cash before departure and the equivalent of around €30 into Swiss Francs (if your trip goes through Switzerland). This will cover you for spending money until you have the chance to change more or visit an ATM.

ATMs are extremely common throughout all European countries. If you are visiting any other countries outside of the 'Eurozone' you will find that most of them accept euros as payment, or you will be able to withdraw local currency from an ATM after arriving in the country. This is the most convenient way to access local currency, just make sure to notify your bank of your travel plans before you depart.

What if I am a smoker?

Smoking is not permitted on our coaches, however we stop regularly while travelling from place to place. Smoking is not permitted in any type of accommodation, including our tents.

Can I drink tap water in Europe?

Tap water is fine to drink in Europe, however we advise that bottled water should be purchased in Greece and Turkey.

What if I am on a special diet?

If you have special dietary requirements e.g. vegetarian or vegan, we will make every endeavour to cater for your specific needs as long as you tell us or your travel agent when you book. Unfortunately in some places in Europe it is not possible to obtain certain special foods, and we cannot guarantee the variety of foods available when eating out. Our On-Road / Site Chefs will put every effort into catering for your specific needs. There are some diets we are unable to cater for such as religious diets, so if you are unsure please call us or ask your travel agent to check.

Please re-confirm any dietary requirements with your On-Road Chef or Trip Leader at the start of your trip.

Will I be contactable on my trip?

Topdeck issue e-docs which will be sent to you six weeks prior to departure and when you have paid in full, which includes your detailed day-to-day itinerary. These also include any vouchers you need for pre and post trip accommodation.

In addition to this, you MUST read the detailed pre-departure information relevant to your trip. This can be downloaded at any time from the trip page on our website. If you would like a copy posted to you, please contact your local Topdeck office. The pre-departure document contains a number of important points that you should be aware of. Please take the time to download and read it.

How much time will I spend on the coach?

We try to spend as little time on the coach as possible so that you have more time to enjoy the places you visit. Please remember though that Europe is a large place and it takes time to get around! On driving days between cities you will be on the coach during the day, stopping off to visit places of interest where possible.

Strict driving rules apply in Europe that limits the maximum number of hours your Driver can drive each day. They also limit the maximum number of days that can be driven before a day off must be taken. We have worked hard to make sure this does not affect your trip, but in some cities it means we will use public transport. The cost for this is included in your trip price and your Trip Leader will show you how to get around.

My trip doesn't start in London. Where will I join my group?

The meeting point in most cases is the joining accommodation, usually in the reception area. Please check your detailed trip itinerary for exact details.

How can I keep up to date?

Please check this website before you travel for the most up to date information on our trips. You can also contact us via social media, on Facebook or Twitter.

Is there free Wi-Fi on Europe trips?

Free Wi-Fi* is now available for all passengers travelling on both coach and sailing trips across Europe. The total allowance per passenger, per trip is 650MB. Unfortunately, the following trips are currently excluded: EXGIAA, EXTUII, EXTUIF, EXTUFI. *Restrictions apply. For full details on Wi-Fi allowances and availability please view here.

What is a Rolling Deposit?

If you cancel your trip more than 42 days before the departure date you may request in writing at the time of cancellation that we provide you with a rolling deposit voucher for use against a future trip. The value and currency of the rolling deposit will be the value and currency of the original deposit paid. The rolling deposit cannot be redeemed by re-booking the same trip for the same departure date originally booked. The voucher must be redeemed within two years from the date of first cancellation. The rolling deposit can be transferred to a friend but cannot be transferred a second time. The passenger must be between 18 to 39 years old to travel. Only one voucher per person per trip is permitted. If redeeming against a trip with a higher deposit the balance will be payable at the time of booking. If you cancel your trip within 42 days or less of the departure date you will forfeit your deposit and you will need to pay our applicable cancellation fee. Rolling deposit vouchers are not available for cancellations within 42 days of the departure date.

Our groups range in size from 8 to 36, with an average of around 22. You will find this varies from trip to trip and typically our Outback trips are smaller.

Is it a problem if I travel on my own?

Travel insurance is not mandatory for passengers travelling in Australia and New Zealand with Topdeck but it is highly recommended. This should be taken out at the time of booking. You can also purchase travel insurance with us through our partner World Nomads.

Passengers with too much luggage on the morning of departure may be told that they cannot take it all with them. In this scenario you will be responsible for making your own arrangements to store or relocate your luggage, and Topdeck will not incur any storage costs. Topdeck reserves the right to check your luggage at departure.

How much spending money will I need?

Naturally everybody's spending varies. Many of your meals are included in the trip price so this really just leaves the occasional meal and your personal spending to budget for. As a general guide we suggest budgeting around AUD$50.00-$60.00 or NZD$50-$60.00 per day.

Are entrance fees included?

On the right hand side of each trip page you'll be able to find two lists titled 'Bucket List Inclusions' and 'More Inclusions' which show exactly what is included in the trip price.

Each trip includes accommodation, transport, meals and sightseeing as displayed here. On our trips in Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Morocco, breakfast is included every day and will vary between cooked and continental. Lunches and dinners are included where listed on the trip itinerary.

What type of accommodation will I stay in?

In Egypt we stay in well-equipped, air-conditioned 4-star hotels, apart from a select few chosen for their superior location or service. If your trip includes a Nile Cruise, then you'll stay on a 5-star cruise boat while on the Nile. Certain trips also offer unique overnight stays in a White Desert camp and on board a traditional Felucca.

Our two Budget trips in Egypt (Egypt Express and Pyramids & Beaches) stay in well-equipped, air-conditioned hotels, predominantly 3-star standard.

In Jordan and Israel we stay in quality 3-star hotels, except in Wadi Rum in Jordan where we stay in a traditional Desert Camp for a unique and memorable overnight experience.

In Morocco we stay in quality 3-star hotels, except in Merzouga where we stay in traditional Berber tents in the desert.

Whichever trip you choose, you can rest assured that every hotel has been thoroughly inspected by Topdeck to ensure they meet our very specific requirements and high standards.

How do I get to my destination?

Because our passengers fly in from all over the world, and to give you the change to grab great flight deals locally, we do not include flights with our packages. You'll be able to source the best deals either from the internet or your travel agent.

We include a meet & greet at the airports in Cairo, Amman, Tel Aviv and Marrakech, plus a transfer to your hotel. It means a stress-free start to your holiday!

Can I extend my stay?

As well as being able to arrange pre and post trip accommodation for you, Topdeck also offer some fantastic bolt on packages which you can add to your holiday. Fancy spending some more time in Cairo or taking an excursion to historic Alexandria in Egypt? Want to visit the 'Rose City' of Petra and Wadi Rum in Jordan? Or how about adding on a trek in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco? To discuss your options you can contact your friendly local Topdeck reservations team.

Can I learn to dive?

Topdeck's Learn to Dive trip in Egypt is the perfect if you want to learn to scuba dive. Learn to Dive stays in Dahab on the Red Sea, renowned as one of the best diving spots in the world.

All equipment (with the exception of the dive manual) is included in the trip price. If you are an experienced diver and need a refresher course, these can be booked for an additional USD$30. Guided dives are also available for passengers who already have an Open Water Licence and have been for a dive within the last six months (supplement applies).

What kind of transportation does Topdeck use?

In Egypt we own all of our vehicles (unlike many other operators), meaning that we can guarantee an excellent standard of transport. We use coaches and mini-buses which are modern, air-conditioned and comfortable.

Sometimes we take 1st class overnight train services to cover the longer journeys from Cairo to Aswan and Luxor to Cairo (recliner seats). Occasionally they can be delayed or experience reliability problems, and with larger groups it can sometimes prove difficult to obtain tickets seating the whole group together. Fortunately we have our fleet of modern air-conditioned coaches on hand, which we often use as an alternative to the trains. The method of transport being used on your trip (train or coach) is normally advised at the briefing meeting on Day 1. Certain trips also feature transport on 5-star luxury cruise boats or traditional felucca boats on the Nile.

In Jordan, Israel and Morocco we use comfy, air-conditioned mini coaches with experienced local drivers.

In what currency should I bring money?

Local currency is easily available from the numerous cash machines in all of our starting cities in the region, plus all of the cities and major towns which we visit. This is the easiest and most convenient way to access local cash – just make sure you notify your bank of your travel plans before you leave.

However, it is useful to have a small amount of cash (US$, GBP or local currency) with you on arrival in case of emergencies.

Tipping is expected for quite a few things (carrying luggage etc.) but you only need to give a small amount and your Trip Leader will advise you what is appropriate to give.

NORTH AMERICA FAQ

Where will my trip depart from?

The departure points for Topdeck's North America trips vary depending on the departure city. The departure point will be at your joining accommodation – please refer to your trip itinerary for exact details. The address of your joining accommodation will also be provided in your pre-departure documentation.

What times will be my trip depart?

This will depend on your particular trip and departure city. Meeting times are generally between 07:30 – 08:30 on the morning of departure. However, on certain trips you will join the group in the evening and will spend that night in the joining city; in these situations, there will be a mandatory Welcome Meeting with your Trip Leader at a set time. Please double check your specific pre-departure documentation and arrive on time for a prompt first day departure, or Welcome Meeting.

How can I make a payment?

  • Call your local Topdeck Office and make payment over the phone by credit or debit card

Each trip includes transport, accommodation, plenty of meals, National Park entry fees (where applicable), sightseeing tours and 'Bucket List Inclusions' activities as specified on each individual trip page.

How can I keep up to date?

Please check this website before you travel for the most up to date information on our trips. You can also contact us via social media, on Facebook or Twitter.

What's NOT included?

Spending money, visa (if applicable), personal travel insurance (compulsory), medical fees, cost of optional activities, entrance fees and excursions (unless specified on the trip page), flights and any meals not specified on the trip page.

How many other people will be on the trip?

There's really no way to know exactly how many people will be on your trip as late bookings and cancellations do occur. Popular itineraries during peak summer season can expect to have 25-45 passengers. In the event of smaller groups, a modified passenger van may be used to improve logistics and create a more intimate group dynamic. There are some fantastic advantages to both larger and smaller group sizes.

What sort of people will be on the trip?

Topdeck travellers are aged between 18 and 39 and come from around the world. Like you, they will be up for a great travel experience and meeting like-minded travellers.

Is it a problem if I travel on my own?

Not at all! Many of our passengers travel alone – often over 50% of our passengers start the trip solo and it's a great way to meet people. What's more, we don't charge compulsory single supplements – instead we'll match you up with roommates of the same sex.

What standard is the accommodation?

On each of our North American trips we've tried to find the ideal combination of good quality accommodation which won't force you to break the bank. The hotels and motels we use are generally 2/3 star American standard hotels. Rooms in North American hotels are often larger than in similarly rated hotels in Europe, and are clean and comfortable.

Rooms usually have 2 double beds, a TV and en-suite bathroom facilities. Some hotels have been selected based on their superior location, while others have been chosen for their higher quality. The hostels we use are usually in a central location and have great communal facilities such as laundry, lounge spaces and bars

Are the accommodations centrally-located?

Accommodations vary with regard to location. We have endeavoured to choose hotels that enhance your travel experience, either through a central location or the level of standard, service and amenities available. Many of our accommodations offer complimentary wifi, swimming pools, etc. and your Trip Leader will explain what to expect prior to arrival.

Getting to and from the sights of the particular city will not be difficult, but keep in mind that many North American cities do not have a true city centre and can be very spread out with less extensive public transportation systems than traditional European cities. In this case, Topdeck's included transportation is a huge advantage and our itineraries are designed so that you'll be able to see all of the must-see sights.

Where will we stop on drive days?

We do try to limit the time spent on the coach so you will have more time to enjoy the places you visit. We have adapted our itineraries to suit the distances travelled, however the USA and Canada are big countries and it takes time to get around.

On some travel days we may spend several hours on the road, but we will always break up the journeys with interesting stops where possible. Stops vary from trip to trip and range from standard commercial service areas to interesting locations such as scenic parks, viewpoints and small cowboy towns!

What are the breakfasts like?

Breakfasts will range from basic continental breakfast options of cereal, toast and muffins, to full cooked hot breakfasts, all with tea and/or coffee. We have tried to use hotels which offer breakfasts in the lobby to give you that little bit of extra time in the morning.

What visas will I need?

Depending on your nationality you may require a visa to enter the United States.

Currently most western visitors are included as part of the Visa Waiver Program. Since 12th January 2009, all Visa Waiver Program travellers are required to obtain an electronic travel authorisation prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the US. Travellers will need to log onto the ESTA website and complete an on-line application in English.

Applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, however it is recommended to be submitted no less than 72 hours prior to departure. The approved ESTA will be valid for up to two years or until the traveller's passport expires and is valid for multiple entries into the US. Please note this is not a guarantee of admissibility to the US. Since 12th January 2009, VWP travellers who have not applied for and received authorisation via ESTA prior to travel have sometimes been denied boarding.

Depending on your nationality you may require a visa to enter Canada. Currently visitors from most European countries, Australia and New Zealand do not need a visa however please check the Citizen and Immigration Canada website for the most up to date information.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory on all Topdeck trips. This should be taken out at the time of booking. You can also purchase travel insurance with us through our partner World Nomads.

Travel insurance is particularly important in North America, where uninsured travellers can be left facing huge medical bills should they require treatment. Double check that the policy you choose covers you for travel in the USA or Canada.

What do I need to bring with me?

This all depends on how much you want to bring! A common problem is over-packing, so it's advisable to pack as light as you can.

Please refer to our suggested clothing list in the pre-departure information. And don't forget your camera, insurance details, passport, visa (if necessary) and a positive attitude! If you suffer from any medical condition, please bring additional supplies or medications and be sure to notify our reservations team. You should also re-confirm this information with your Trip Leader as soon as possible.

What about spending money?

Naturally everybody's spending varies. Many of your meals are included in the trip price so this really just leaves a few meals and your personal spending to budget for. As a general guide we suggest budgeting around US$50.00-60.00 per day.

Are there any optional activities?

Throughout the trip, your Trip Leader will also inform you of optional activities which you can participate in. Should you choose to do so, you will need to budget extra for these activities.

These activities are entirely optional and you should never feel compelled to join in any of them if you don't wish to. You will be able to find a more detailed list and price guidelines in your pre-departure information.

Do I need to tip?

Tipping is a way of life in America, but in true Topdeck style your Crew will not be asking for any tips themselves at the end of your trip!

However when dining out or visiting bars, it is courteous to tip the serving staff, who rely on tips to supplement their wages, which are legally below the minimum wage and often only a couple of dollars an hour. In a bar, a $2 tip per visit to bar is recommended if you are purchasing 1 or 2 drinks. If you're buying a round for a group, a $3 tip is recommended. If you choose not to tip in a bar, you are likely to cause offence and may struggle to get served again.

In restaurants, a tip of around 15-20% of the bill is advised. A $1 to $2 tip for taxi rides is recommended.

Topdeck selects optional excursions in certain areas to enhance your local experience. Many of these are guided activities and a $3 to $5 tip for each excursion or activity is recommended.

What is the drinking age?

The drinking age in the USA is 21 years. All bars and drinking spots check ID as a matter of routine, either on entry or via the serving staff (when you order an alcoholic drink in restaurants, etc.). For this reason you should always carry some form of photographic ID (typically your passport) on you if you wish to buy alcohol.

In Canada, the drinking age is 18 in Alberta & Quebec, and 19 in British Columbia & Ontario. Our Canadian Rockies trip visits both Alberta & British Columbia. Our USA & Canada Adventure trip visits both Quebec & Ontario. You should always carry photographic ID (typically your passport) with you if you wish to purchase alcohol.

Rolling deposits cannot be redeemed or refunded for cash. What is the Adventure Pass?

Want to experience the real Africa in all its rugged glory? With our Topdeck Adventure Pass, you’re given the green light to take part in all the activities that make Africa so unique. Compulsory for all trips, the Adventure Pass ensures all the major highlights are covered and your once in a lifetime trip is one to remember. Ready for the adventure? Let’s go!

What is the Gorilla & Chimp Excursion permit?

For many of our passengers, the opportunity to trek through the Ugandan jungle to witness rare mountain gorillas in the wild is a rewarding and memorable experience.

This excursion is entirely optional, but due to admirable conservation efforts being made to ensure the gorillas' survival, only a limited number of gorilla permits are available per day. These permits must be pre-booked and paid in advance, and the cost is listed on each itinerary page featuring the Gorilla Trek. Please be aware that no company can reserve permits in bulk and they are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning that the sooner you book, the more likely it is that you'll be able to do this incredible trek.

Included in the permit cost is an excursion to track chimpanzees in their natural habitat at Kyambura Gorge, another unforgettable African wildlife encounter. Contact our Topdeck reservations team if you have any further queries.

What is the Visa situation?

We recommend that if possible please try to obtain a visa prior to arrival as rules and regulations for Africa have a tendency to change without warning. Information provided by embassies and consulates tends to have a strong focus on you obtaining a visa in your own country at a cost far higher than at the airport/border.

We normally refer passengers to the following very helpful visa websites: http://www.projectvisa.com/regions/Africa
http://cibtvisas.co.uk/

East Africa Visa:
Note that Kenya & Uganda now falls under one 'East Africa Tourist Visa', so that is one visa that includes both Uganda & Kenya for a multiple entry 90 day period. This visa may be obtained on arrival in Kenya, but must specifically be asked for, or the client will only get a single entry /single country tourist visa.

As Topdeck Travel is not a visa handling agency, our advice is to be used as a guideline only, as visa/passport requirements may change suddenly & without notice to Acacia Africa...

Please ensure you contact the relevant embassy at least 2 months prior to departure to ensure that you have the correct travel documents for your trip to Africa.

What's the transport like?

You'll be travelling in one of our state of the art overland safari vehicles. The word safari means 'journey' in Swahili and with Topdeck and Acacia you'll be sure to journey in style! Our fleet of overland safari vehicles is quite simply the finest in Africa. Your truck is a rolling home for the duration of your trip.

It will also keep your food and drinks fresh (in the on-board drinks cooler), your belongings safely stowed (in secure lockers big enough for your entire luggage) and your body well-cushioned (thanks to the comfy seats). On top of that, it comes equipped with power points to charge up laptops, cameras and mp3 players so you can plug in and chill out when you need to.

What's the accommodation like?

At night you'll stay in comfortable, two-person dome tents kitted out with insect screens and foam mats for a good night's sleep. Your Crew will show you how to erect them and they're surprisingly easy – even novice campers will be popping them up and pulling them down in no time!

The campsites we stop at along the way are remote and wild enough to give you that authentic African holiday experience (but we'll let you in on a secret – they're also furnished with enough creature comforts to keep you sane!). In certain locations our trips feature included hostel upgrades and we also use comfortable hotel accommodation on Zanzibar.

How about the food?

Experiencing all the delights that Africa has to offer can work up a serious appetite. But never fear – all of our trips include loads of appetising meals so you'll enjoy yourself on a full stomach! The number of meals included is displayed on each individual trip page in the 'More Inclusions' box on the right hand side.

We reckon that you'll be pleasantly surprised with the great quality of our tasty and healthy included meals. On occasion you may be asked to lend a hand with the meals, under the keen eye of our Crew. They'll give you all the guidance you need to play your part in the creation of some culinary masterpieces!

How many people will be on my trip?

Our groups have a maximum size of 24 and usually average around 16 people.

How old will the people on my trip be?

In conjunction with our African partner Acacia Africa, Topdeck are delighted to offer safaris exclusively for 18 to 30-somethings, meaning that you'll be able to enjoy Africa with like-minded young travellers!

Can I extend my stay?

Topdeck are happy to help with booking pre or post accommodation at our start or finish accommodations. Payment is usually made direct to the service provider on arrival. Please request these services at the time of booking.

What clothes should I take?

The climate in Africa varies from country to country. Most countries range between hot days and mild nights in the summer months to warm days and cool nights in the winter.

Some African countries can get very hot in summer, so lightweight cottons and linens are recommended along with clothing to cover your head and neck and high factor sunblock. If visiting in winter you will need to bring some warmer clothing for the cool evenings.

Do I need much cash?

You will be able to withdraw local currency from ATMs in all major cities. Your Trip Leader can advise you when you might need some local currency. You should also bring some cash with you on arrival (US$ or GBP), in addition to your local payment amount.

Tipping is expected for quite a few things (carrying your luggage etc.) but you only need to give a small amount and your Trip Leader will advise you what is appropriate.

Vaccinations

There are recommended vaccinations for some of our destinations. Please consult your doctor.

What standard is the accommodation?

Our trips stay in a range of quality, character-filled hotels, predominantly 3-4 star standard. Rooms are twin or double share with a minimal amount of triple rooms available on request. If you're travelling solo, then you'll be sharing with someone of the same gender.

We've tried to avoid bland, multi-national chain hotels where possible and select smaller hotels which are more reflective of the character and vibe of the countries and regions we visit. Our hotels are close to public transport (allowing you to get to wherever you want to go during your free time) and are as centrally located as possible. While we can't always manage to get you right into the beating heart of a city, we can guarantee that no-one else will get you closer!

We also use traditional homestays and guest houses in some locations, giving you the most authentic experience possible.

For most of the countries where visas are required, it is NOT possible to obtain the visa whilst on the trip.

Topdeck requests that necessary visas for all countries are obtained before the Topdeck trip commences.

In some instances, during the Topdeck trip at border crossings into Laos and Cambodia it will be possible for certain countries to obtain a visa at the border if they have been unable to do so beforehand.

Do I need travel insurance?
