The role of the Topdeck Trip Leader is to lead groups of unique individuals on their adventures through Europe. With class. With compassion. With care. There’s a reason Topdeckers refer to our Trip Leaders as legends. Cos that’s exactly what they are. Got what it takes?

What qualities do our Trip Leaders have?

Passion – There's not much point in applying to be a Trip Leader if you don’t have passion for the job. Topdeck Trip Leaders thrive on adventure. They love creating unforgettable moments for our customers. Nothing’s too ‘out there’. Jumping on the karaoke mic in Florence? Skydiving in Switzerland? Easy.

Friendliness – Connection is at the heart of each trip. That starts with an approachable Trip Leader. Our Trip Leaders love getting to know all our customers on a personal level; they coax the shy, solo passengers out of their shell, fit in easily with groups who’ve decided to adventure together, and have a never-ending cup of positivity about the day ahead. You’re not just a Trip Leader – you're a friend, a hype person, the good-time go-to... whatever is thrown your way.

Professionalism – Fun is central to our trips (naturally) but so is being professional. This is your job, after all. We expect our Trip Leaders to be reliable, responsible, and composed. Any unexpected hiccups? Handled like a pro. Taking charge is second nature – whether it’s dealing with strong personalities or finding lost luggage. Safety and satisfaction are the top priority here – whilst keeping that mood upbeat.

Knowledge – Nobody needs to be a walking encyclopedia, but you do need to know your stuff. Quickfire topics: destinations, local customs, hidden gems, logistics. From top tier local eats in Lisbon to navigating Italian train stations, you’re the person who has all the deets. Bonus points if you’re always learning and bursting to share those “wow, I didn’t know that!” facts with the group.

Organisation – Real talk: group travel can get chaotic without someone taking the lead. And it can’t be just anyone. A legendary Trip Leader does allll of the above AND is organised – without their customers even knowing. Daily to do lists include: managing itineraries, bookings, timings, and logistics. But here’s the thing: the trip still feels spontaneous. That’s some crafty Trip Leader magic. You’re the reason everything works. Meaning? Your Topdeckers’ focus = enjoying Every. Single. Second.

How long have you been a Trip Leader for Topdeck?
“I have two seasons under my belt; 2025 will be my third.”

Why did you become a Trip Leader?
“I spent most of my twenties working to save up for travel, then spending it all on travel. After a few years it occurred to me it might be an idea to combine the two. Topdeck came up, and I thought, ‘Wow, this sounds like a lot of fun!’ Turns out I was right.”

    Favourite Topdeck trip?
“Difficult to choose, but I’m going to have to say the Play & Pause: Epic European. A feast of a trip – a meander around so many of Europe’s must-see cities, plus a few lesser-known but brilliant stops you don’t get on most other trips, all at a nice pace with plenty of time to drink it all in.”

    “I’ve been a Trip Leader since 2018.”

Why did you become a Trip Leader?
“I became a Trip Leader because I am most passionate about travel and sharing that with other people. Helping people create lifetime memories and tick off their bucket list gets me up in the morning, and being part of their journey is the best thing ever.”

    Favourite Topdeck trip?
“My favourite trip has to be the Play & Pause: Epic European. It’s called ‘Epic’ for a reason - 36 days of incredible locations (both famous ones and hidden gems), loads of free time to explore and 5 weeks to make the best of friends. What more could a girl ask for?”

How long have you been a Trip Leader for Topdeck?
I have only recently just started working as a trip leader for Topdeck this year and boy what a year it’s been! So many amazing trips and even more incredible passengers!

Why did you become a Trip Leader?
I obviously love a bit of travel, chatting with new people from all walks of life, and getting on a microphone and making a fool of myself daily. But the real reason I chose to become a Trip Leader was to help create those unforgettable memories people will have forever!

    Favourite Topdeck trip?
My favourite trip so far is Play & Pause: Southeastern Europe Highlights. If the Balkans are not on your travel list, get them added!! Stunning, need I say more?

FAQs

Am I eligible to work as Topdeck Trip Leader?

You will need to possess or be eligible for a UK passport, EU passport or hold an ancestry visa which allows the right to work in the UK and/or EU. Applicants must ensure their own eligibility and passports must be acquired in time for our training trip in early 2026.

How much will I get paid as a Topdeck Trip Leader with Topdeck?

Our TLs are contracted on a trip-by-trip basis. When you are on the road we will cover all of your expenses, including accommodation, some meals, travel and some incidentals. We will also pay a daily rate and food allowance. More details will be discussed with you at the interview.

What if I’m not successful during a stage of recruitment or training? Can I apply again?

Yes, please apply next season! We love to see applicants reapply; it shows us that they are determined and able to take on feedback to succeed.

Will I have any expenses covered for my interview?

During the interview days, we are unable to cover any of the expenses. We understand a lot of our candidates must travel to interview with us, and we do try to interview in varying locations. We also understand this can be a big commitment, but just ask our current crew and they’ll tell you: it could be the most rewarding thing you do!

How many trips will I get as a member of On Road Crew?

The team does their best to ensure all crew are allocated the same number of days on the road, regardless of trip length. If you are not an EU passport or visa holder, you will also be limited by the number of days you can spend in the Schengen area. For most, this is a maximum of 90 days in every 180 days on a rolling basis. All days spent in the Schengen area – including personal travel, the training trip, and time leading trips across Europe for Topdeck – contribute toward that 90/180 day maximum.

What if I can’t make it to an interview day? Am I able to attend an online interview?

If you are unable to attend an interview day, please let the team know and we'll do our best to accommodate you online. Preference will be given to those who attend in-person interviews.

What does the training cover?

Honest talk: this isn’t a paid holiday, but it is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of a lifetime. Our training will cover the fundamental skills required to fulfil your role and train you on how to work as a Trip Leader within the Topdeck family. Our on-road training will cover those ‘wow’ locations that our passengers love to see. You’ll be recommending the best gelato in Rome and spieling like a pro in no time. You’ll also get a chance to meet our suppliers and try most of the experiences offered to our passengers firsthand, before you complete a ‘shadow’ trip with some of our great crew. This training allows you to gain an understanding of how to run an on-road trip, provide unique experiences for our passengers, and so much more.

Will I get paid during training?

On our training trip, we provide our trainees with an allowance to cover expenses. We also cover all expenses, including most meals, all accommodation, and transport for the duration of the training trip. This is discussed in further detail at the interview.

Do I need to have been on a Topdeck trip to apply?

Not at all! A lot of our current crew had never been on a Topdeck trip before they came to work with us. However, a passion for group travel is a must!

What does Topdeck look for?

At Topdeck we are a big believer that being yourself is the key to everything. What we love most about our crew is that they are all different, but they share a common passion for delivering life-changing travel experiences. You must also have availability to work throughout our summer season from May -October. Although it’s not a must, we’d be pretty excited if you have any travel experience in Europe.

Where are the interview locations?

Topdeck searches across the globe to find our fantastic On Road Crew, and we offer interviews across multiple locations! More details about where we are interviewing this year will be provided in the next stage of the recruitment process.
