Discover the real Europe

Real value

Europe has a sh*tload going on. And if Excel budgets and day-by-day planners aren’t your thing, sorting the logistics will make you hyperventilate. Picking the best hostel in Amsterdam. Booking that ferry from Athens. Getting to Lake Bled. Finding a 24-hr pierogi place in Kraków. Forget, it – we’ll sort it for you. Meaning? No hassle. No number crunching. No going hungry. You’re safe with us. Yeah, you can do it alone, but it sure as hell won’t be the same.

Your Europe Qs answered

Sun worshippers will want to visit Europe between June and August when the weather is warmest. If you’re after smaller crowds and lower prices, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are a good bet. Psyched to make snow angels?

Joining one of our big Europe trips? Awesome! Check your trip notes for suggestions on what to pack. Don’t forget your passport and any necessary visas.

It depends! You’ll need to budget for spending money, meals (only the ones which aren’t included, obvs) and those immense optional activities. Go through your itinerary and think about the optionals you’re keen to experience – it’s all part of the fun!

Most European countries use euros (EUR). These are the exceptions: the United Kingdom (British pounds), Denmark (Danish krone), Sweden (Swedish krona), Czech Republic (Czech koruna), Croatia (Croatian kuna), Hungary (Hungarian forint), Poland (Polish złoty), Romania (Romanian leu) and Bulgaria (Bulgarian lev).

In European restaurants, if you’re happy with the service you can leave a few extra euros to thank your waiter/waitress. Most people tip between 5% and 10% of the bill. Some restaurants add a ‘service charge’ on top of your bill – this is your tip, so don’t forget to check!

English is the most widely spoken second language across Europe BUT that doesn’t mean everybody speaks it. There may be times when you’ll need to communicate with people who don’t speak the same language as you – it’s all part of authentic travelling, and a smile goes a long way!

German, French and Italian have the highest number of native speakers in the EU.

Bonus questions...

You must have comprehensive travel insurance to participate in a Topdeck trip to Europe. You will be unable to join us without it.

It’s your responsibility to obtain the correct visas for your trip. Ask your travel agent or check with the relevant embassies before you depart.

Find travel advice for Australia citizens here, for New Zealand citizens here, for US citizens here, for Canadian citizens here and for British citizens here. If you’re travelling from a country not listed here, head to the relevant government website for more information.

We recommend you consult your doctor about health and vaccination requirements before you travel to Europe. For current travel safety advice, please check your home country’s travel advisories.

It depends where you’re going, but Type C plugs (230 volts) are a good bet for most European countries (the UK and Ireland are an exception and use Type G).

We recommend you bring a universal plug adapter – airports usually sell them, but it’s cheaper to buy one before you go.
