THE NEED-TO-KNOWS

What’s included in my trip?

On each trip page you'll find a 'What's included' section that gives you the low-down on exactly what's included in your trip price. All our trips include transport, accommodation, some (drool-worthy) meals, a heap of I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E included experiences and your awesome AF Topdeck Crew. Inclusions vary with each trip though, so be sure to check out your trip page.

What's NOT included in my trip?

Spending money (duh), visas, personal travel insurance, medical fees, flights, departure taxes and any meals not specified on the trip page. Excursions and entrance fees are also not included – unless specified in the ‘Included experiences’ section of your trip page.

We’ve scoured the globe for the best things to do in your free time – and dubbed them ‘Optional activities’. These aren’t included in your trip price but are highly recommended as something to budget for. They’re that good.

Are flights included?

International flights to and from the destination your trip starts and ends are not included and must be purchased separately. But DW, there’s plenty of online options for you to shop around for the best quote. Or book through your travel agent. Easy!

Any flights you take during your Topdeck trip are listed under the ‘What’s included’ section of your trip page. We’ll sort everything as part of your booking and the flight cost is included in your overall trip price.

Is there free time?

Relax – you’ve got heaps of it. And if you need some help deciding what to do with all that free time, we’ve got your back.

Throughout your trip we’ve organised a variety of ‘Optional activities’ that we know you’ll love. You can find a list of ‘Optional activities’ specific to your trip on the trip page – along with approximate prices to help you budget.

And like the totally unoriginal name suggests, they’re entirely optional – so you can pick and choose whether you want to jump on board or do your own, spontaneous, this-is-what-I-came-for-thing.

How many people will be on my trip?

Group sizes vary from trip to trip. On average Hotel or Hostel Plus trips have around 35 passengers travelling together (with a maximum group size of 48). Most of our Explorer trips average around 16 to 20 Topdeckers, with a maximum group size of 30.

If you want to find out how many like-minded travellers will be on your specific trip, our Customer Service Team can help – use our live chat or give them a ring.

What sort of people will be on my trip?

Curious? Open-minded? Same. Topdeckers are a mixed bunch, but that’s what makes us special. They come from all over the globe and are aged between 18 and 39. Like you, they’re looking to feel real. To experience more. To embrace the unknown. To grow and connect – without judgement.

Want to get to know them a little better? Download the Topdeck app and connect with your fellow Topdeckers before your trip starts to get the low-down on who’ll be joining and maybe catch up for a few pre/post trip bevvies. Sweet!

Is it a problem if I travel on my own?

Not at all! Sooooo many Topdeckers are solo travellers. In fact, over 50% of our travellers start the trip solo and finish the trip with mates for life!

Plus, we don’t charge compulsory single supplements – instead, we’ll match you with an awesome AF roommate(s) of the same sex. But if you’d prefer to ride 100% solo at night time, our Hotel or Explorer trips are for you. Chat to our Customer Service Team online or over the phone and they’ll get it sorted.

What kind of transport does Topdeck use?

From hassle-free internal flights to roomie on-road coaches, plus the occasional local mode of transport (insert: Japanese bullet train) – we get you safely from A to B in comfort and style. Modes of transport vary from trip to trip, so check out the specifics under ‘What’s included’ on your trip page.

What type of accommodation do you stay in?

From quality hotels in the centre of the action, to unique regional stays that immerse you in the local way of life – we have a mixed bag of accommodation styles depending on the destination and trip style you’ve picked.

Think: character-filled hotels, social hostels, sailing boats, safari lodges, beachside resorts, desert camps, and local homestays. To uncover the specifics of your trip-of-a-lifetime, head to the accommodation section under ‘What’s included’ on your trip page – or contact our Customer Service Team find out more about our various Trip Styles.

WAYS TO STAY

How do Hotel trips work?

Get a room. Book a Hotel trip as a couple or twosome and snag yourself a twin or double room to call your own. And if you’re going it alone? We’ll pair you with another solo traveller of the same sex.

In the USA and Canada, you can expect to stay in a combo of hotels, motels and lodges. Our Hotel trips in Europe stay in a mix of quality, character-filled hotels that are either smack-bang amongst the action or right next to handy public transport links. That means: no rip-off taxi fares, no loooooong walks back to base and no getting lost (unless it’s on purpose).

Hotel trips are designed for travellers who like to have themselves a few creature comforts – without compromising on location or experience. Hotel rooms in some European cities and built-up destinations may be smaller than what you’re used to. But you’ll still get an en-suite. And maybe even a hairdryer. Minds will be blown.

How do Hostel Plus trips work?

Embrace the social life. Book a Hostel Plus trip and your overnight stays will be filled with mixing amongst a bunch of like-minded people at the hostel bar, versing room 202 in a friendly game of pool or making a ‘must do’ list with your fellow Topdeckers over breakkie.

Rooms are single sex and multi-share (usually with a maximum of 6 beds). Towels and bedding are provided on all Hostel Plus trips. Yeah, you’ll have to call shotgun on the bottom bunk faster than your roomie and carry your body wash to the shower block but that’s part of the experience.

All our Hostel Plus accomm are either centrally located or close to public transport links. Meaning? You spend more time doing the stuff you came to do and less time in Ubers.

And sharing a room means you’re likely to have enough cash left over for that skydive you’ve been eyeing off!

How do Explorer trips work?

Maybe you’ve done that big Euro trip and want to delve deeper into your fave destination. Or you’re obsessed with somewhere new and want to experience it wholly. Or you’ve seen our Bravo Italia trip and went ‘sh*t that looks good’. Point is – our Explorer range gives you more free time to do what you want to do.

With a max of 30 passengers (but averaging closer to 20), our Explorer trips are made for travellers chasing a more intimate experience. Explorer trips offer more time to (you guessed it) explore. More free time to head off the tourist trail. More free time to immerse yourself in the local culture. More getting lost in the moment.

From Kenya to Bali, all our Explorer trips have an awesome AF local guide at the helm – ready and waiting to provide you with tips, tricks and recommendations specific to the region.

And the accommodation? You’ll stay in a mixed bag of hotels, guesthouses, hostels, safari lodges, homestays, overnight trains, boats, desert camps – equipped with the essentials you need in a good base to start exploring. Share with your bestie, lover, new Topdecker roomie or pay extra to fly solo in a twin/double room.

How do Sailing trips work?

A pirate’s life for you. Our Sailing trips are all about the perks of travelling by sea: dips in aquamarine waters, Game of Thrones-style scenery and time to chill top deck (literally) with your new crew.

Let’s talk boats. Our Dubrovnik Dreams trip includes travel on a Traditional wooden boat - think cosy bunk beds and rustic common areas. Our Croatian Riviera trip offers the choice between Traditional or Plus boats: Plus boats come with extras like bigger cabins and hot breakfasts. All boats have twin or double cabins with en-suites and air-con. And if you really need it, there’s Wi-Fi when the engine is running.

Space is limited on board, so we suggest travelling light with a soft backpack or rucksack. Top tip: tipping is standard in Croatia, so as thanks for all the good times we recommend a small tip of around €10 for each local crew member (this excludes your Topdeck Sailing Representative, natch). Also, Mother Nature can be a fickle mistress, so itineraries are subject to change depending on weather conditions.

I'm doing a Hostel Plus or Explorer trip with my partner. Will we be able to share a room?

Hostel rooms on our Hostel Plus and Explorer trips are booked on a single-sex basis. So, heterosexual couples should not expect to share.

However, your Trip Leader will try and room couples together wherever possible. For instance, if twin or double share accommodation is available at certain locations, you may be able to share a private room. It may also be possible to co-ordinate with other couples in the group so two or more couples can share together. This is entirely at the discretion of your Trip Leader.

Are there room supplements available?

It depends. All our trip prices are based on a twin, double or multi-share option however, on certain trips we can offer single, twin or double room supplements. For upgrade information specific to your trip, live chat or call our friendly Customer Service Team.

ON-ROAD STUFF

Do I need travel insurance?

Absolutely! It’s a requirement that all Topdeckers have comprehensive travel insurance to cover the likes of cancellation, personal injury and medical expenses. You’ll be barred from travelling with us without it. It’s also super important you read the fine print of the policy you’re taking out, so you know exactly what activities you are covered for (looking at you, adrenalin junkies!) and what your excess limits are in cases of emergency – before, during and after your trip. As a rule, you should book your travel insurance at the time of booking your trip.

Do you sell travel insurance?

Short answer – no. BUT our Customer Service Team can arrange cover for Australian citizens with our partnered travel insurance provider. Just message them on our live chat or pick up the phone.

Where can I get travel insurance?

There are soooooo many different companies out there – Google it and go from there. You will find large supermarkets, department stores and banks sell travel insurance. It’s not hard to find one, but make sure you read the fine print, so you purchase the right one for you and your travel plans.

What do I need to bring with me?

Well, your passport is always a good place to start. We don’t have a comprehensive list of absolutely every item you should pack for your trip-of-a-lifetime – we know you can figure that out on your own. But if you do need some tips, out Customer Service Team have few up their sleeve – chat them with your q’s.

How much money should I bring with me?

It varies! Obvs, there are loads of great souvenirs to be bought and nights on the town to get involved in (if that’s your thing). Heaps of your meals are included, so this just leaves a few meals and your personal spending to budget for.

Plus, don’t forget those awesome AF ‘Optional activities’ we’ve arranged for you. From gondola rides in Venice to scuba diving in Bali, there’s something for everyone – so keep them in mind when budgeting. Approximate prices are outlined on your trip page.

Will I have regular access to Wi-Fi?

Yup! Most of the places we stay offer free Wi-Fi (except in the middle of the Sahara Desert or while sailing on a felucca down the Nile...obvs). Plus, our European coaches offer free Wi-Fi if E.T. really needs to phone home – but this isn’t unlimited, so keep the streaming and downloads for your accommodation k?

When you’re out and about, most restaurants and cafes will allow you to jump on their Wi-fi when you order something. Or you can buy a local SIM upon arrival so you can be connected while you wander. Easy.

Will I be contactable while I am on my trip?

Of course. You can use the complimentary Wi-Fi at our overnight accommodation and on some of our coaches. Alternatively, chat to your phone provider about an international roaming deal or buy a local SIM card upon arrival. So many options!

And if you need to be contacted in the case of an emergency, Topdeck HQ have a direct line to your Trip Leader 24/7. You’re safe with us.

Do I need a visa?

Obtaining the correct visas for your trip is your own responsibility. Not having correct visas could mean missing out on part (or all) of your trip. Ask your travel agent or check with the appropriate embassies before you depart, remembering that visa requirements can change at short notice.

Please note: For most countries where visas are required, it's NOT possible to obtain a visa while on the trip. Some visas take 3-4 weeks to obtain – so get on it early!

For trips going to Russia, Topdeck will provide invitation letters that you must have to obtain your visa. For this reason, it's essential that you provide us with your passport details (or get your travel agent to pass them on) as soon as you book.

For all non-restricted nationalities travelling to Jordan (please check the eligibility for your passport), we will obtain a free visa on your behalf. To obtain your free visa on arrival in Amman, we will require your full passport, flight and insurance details no later than 60 days before arriving to ensure our representative can meet you before immigration. If you do not provide us with these details, we will be unable to obtain a free visa for you and you will be subject to paying the full amount on arrival. So, be sure to get in contact with our Customer Service Team via chat or over the phone!

Coming on our Jordan & Israel trip? Topdeck does not include Israel visa fees in the total trip price. Please check the individual entry requirements for your passport.

Do I need any travel vaccines?

We don’t have medical degrees. There are recommended vaccinations for some Topdeck destinations – please consult your GP or closest vaccination clinic for more information.

What if I'm a smoker?

Smoking is not permitted on Topdeck coaches – however, we make regular break stops while travelling from place to place. Smoking is not permitted in any of our accommodation, including our tents.

What if I'm on a special diet?

If you have any dietary requirements, we’ll make every effort to cater to your needs – as long as you advise your travel agent or our Customer Service Team when you book.

Please note: Although we’ll do everything in our power to cater to your needs, Topdeck cannot guarantee this will be possible in every restaurant we visit. We also cannot cater for tastes or dislikes, as most of our included evening meals feature a set menu.

Please re-confirm any dietary requirements with your Trip Leader at the start of your trip.

What if I have a medical condition?

If you have an existing medical condition or disability that may affect your trip, we ask that you inform your travel agent or our Customer Service Team in writing at the time of booking. We may ask you to obtain a medical certificate. If we reasonably feel we are unable to satisfactorily accommodate your particular needs, we reserve the right to decline the booking or to require that you be accompanied by a person who is able to provide full assistance to you.

How can I keep up to date on my trip details?

The best way to stay updated (and chat to your fellow Topdeckers) is by downloading the Topdeck app.

Or you can check our Travel Alerts page here for any urgent, unprecedented changes to your trip.

Our awesome AF Customer Service Team are also available ‘round-the-clock to answer any of your questions. Give them a buzz, send them a message through our live chat or slide into our social media DM’s.

TRAVELLING TO EUROPE?

Where will my trip depart from?

Detailed information on your trip start and end point can be found on your My Topdeck Account or in the documents sent to you prior to departure.

Found cheaper flights to Paris? No worries! Meet us there at 5pm on Day 1. Just make sure you tell us or your travel agent at the time of booking, so we know you’ll be joining the trip a lil’ later.

What time do I check-in to my trip?

For most trips departing from London, you'll need to meet your Topdeck Trip Leader and check in by 6.30am. Check-in times in other cities can vary from trip to trip. Please check your trip documents for details.

What time do we get back to London?

If your trip ends in London, we usually arrive between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. The drop-off point will be the same as your start point. Please check your trip notes carefully for exact details.

Our return time depends on external factors such as traffic, ferry delays and hold-ups at British immigration. In peak summer season it's possible that our arrival time in London may be delayed – and throughout the year we may encounter unforeseen circumstances which could delay our arrival to London by up to several hours. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you do not book flights out of London for the day your trip finishes.

How much time will I spend on the coach?

We try to spend as little time on the coach as possible so you have more time to enjoy the places you visit (obvs). However, Europe is BIG – so it does takes time to get around! Some days will include long hours of driving, BUT it’s a great opportunity to get to know your trip mates, catch up on some zzz’s or practise your high-school French.

Strict driving rules apply in Europe that limit the max number of hours your Driver can clock up each day. They also limit the number of consecutive drive days before a day off must be taken. Our Drivers are incredible, but they’re also human. This means sometimes we’ll get public transport instead of travelling by coach. Public transport tix are included in your trip price and your expert Trip Leader will show you how to get around like a local.

What type of accommodation will I stay in?

Our Europe trips offer a range of accommodation styles to suit every traveller’s needs. Depending on whether you book a Hotel, Hostel Plus or Explorer trip through Europe, you’ll stay in a variety of quality well-equipped hotels and hostels.

To uncover the specifics of your trip-of-a-lifetime, head to the accommodation section under ‘What’s included’ on your trip page – or contact our Customer Service Team for more information on our Trip Styles.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring?

Each Topdecker is limited to one item of standard size luggage, plus a day pack.

The maximum weight of your main bag must not exceed 44lb/20kg – and the size for all bags must not exceed 70cm x 45cm x 25cm. Due to weight regulations, passengers with overweight luggage may be asked to offload the excess on the morning the trip departs (eek).

Please note that small, hard suitcases can’t be taken on board the coach – so stick with a backpack or soft-shell bag.

What currencies will I need?

ATMs are extremely common throughout all European countries. If you're visiting any countries outside of the 'Eurozone', you'll find that most of them accept euros as payment – or you’ll be able to withdraw local currency from an ATM after arriving in the country. This is the most convenient way to access local currency – just make sure to tell your bank of your travel plans before you depart!

United Kingdom – Great British Pound (GBP)

‘Eurozone’ countries (eg. France, Italy, Spain) – Euros (EUR)

Switzerland – Swiss Francs (CHF)

Czech Republic – Czech Koruna (CZK)

Poland – Polish Zloty (PLN)

Hungary – Hungarian Forint (HUF)

Albania – Albanian Lek (ALL)

Croatia – Croatian Kuna (HRK)

Do I need to exchange cash before I leave?

Travel hack alert! We recommend that you exchange approximately €100 in cash before your trip departs (plus around €30 in Swiss Francs, if your trip goes through Switzerland). This will cover you for spending money until you have the chance to exchange more or visit an ATM.

TRAVELLING TO NEW ZEALAND?

Where will my trip depart from? What time does it start?

Detailed information on your trip start and end point can be found on your My Topdeck Account or in the documents sent to you prior to departure. If you have any questions, live chat our Customer Service Team and they’ll be able to help!

Please note that small, hard suitcases can’t be taken on board the coach – so stick with a backpack or soft-shell bag.

What type of accommodation will I stay in?

All our New Zealand trips are Explorer trips. Meaning? You’ll stay in a mix of social hostels at the heart of the action, well-equipped holiday lodges surrounded by epic scenery and a traditional Maori marae (Kiwi Encounter only).

To uncover the specifics of your trip-of-a-lifetime, head to the accommodation section under ‘What’s included’ on your trip page.

What currency will I need?

New Zealand Dollar – NZD

Do I need to change money before I leave?

ATMs are extremely common throughout New Zealand so you’ll be able to withdraw cash from an ATM after arriving in the country. This is the most convenient way to access local currency – just make sure to tell your bank of your travel plans before you depart!

Travel hack alert! It’s a good idea to take out a bit of cash before your trip departs. You can use this to pay for ‘Optional activities’ on the coach and saves you rushing to the nearest ATM before dinner with the gang.

TRAVELLING TO THE MIDDLE EAST OR NORTH AFRICA?

Where will my trip depart from? What time does it start?

Detailed information on your trip start and end point can be found on your My Topdeck Account or in the documents sent to you prior to departure. If you have any questions, live chat our Customer Service Team and they’ll be able to help!

Are arrival airport transfers included?

Yes! We’ve taken the hassle out of navigating your way to the hotel and included arrival airport transfers in your trip price. Give us your flight details at least 2 weeks before departing, touch down at the airport and meet your Topdeck Rep outside the gates (hint: they're holding a placard with your name on it). Easy.

How much time will I spend on the coach?

We try to spend as little time on the coach as possible so you have more time to enjoy the places you visit (obvs). However, things in the Middle East and North Africa tend to be pretty spread out – so it does take time to get around! Some days will include long hours of driving, BUT it’s a great opportunity to get to know your trip mates, catch up on some zzz’s or take in the jaw-dropping scenery.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Yes – if you are booking our Egypt Express trip you will need to bring your own sleeping bag for our overnight felucca sailing experience.

Will I need any special clothing?

Whist visiting some destinations, sights and attractions in the Middle East and Africa it is customary to cover your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect. It’s a good idea to pack t-shirts, long pants or long skirts for when this is required. Your Trip Leader will advise you well in advance when you will be required to cover up.

What type of accommodation will I stay in?

All our Middle East and North Africa trips are Explorer trips. Meaning? You’ll stay in a mix of well-equipped hotels, social hostels and authentic stays that allow you to delve deeper into each unique destination.

Topdeckers on our Jordan Adventure, Jordan & Israel and Moroccan Explorer trips will also get to experience a night in a desert camp. The camp features twin-share tents or cabins, with beds, pillows and all sheets and blankets provided. BUT the bathroom facilities are basic (hey, you're in the desert!) and the showers are usually cold-water only – but it's all part of an amazing experience you’ll remember forever!

Booking our Egypt Express trip? You’ll have an overnight stay on a traditional felucca sailing boat. Feluccas are traditional wooden sailing boats that have been used as transport up and down the Nile for centuries. Meaning? No motors. No cabins. No hairdryers. The boat’s broad canvas sails offer shade and protection from the elements by day. And by night, we’ll sleep outdoors on comfy mattresses – so don’t forget a sleeping bag. And for other…things? DW there’s a toilet and shower on board. All meals are prepared by the felucca crew aboard the boat. During winter months it can get cold on the river, especially at night. So, it’s a good idea to bring a jacket or warm windcheater during these months.

To uncover the specifics of your trip-of-a-lifetime, head to the accommodation section under ‘What’s included’ on your trip page.

What currency will I need?

Jordan – Jordanian Dinar (JOD)

Israel – Israeli Shekel (ILS)

Egypt – Egyptian Pound (EGP)

Morocco – Moroccan Dirham (MAD)

Do I need to change money before I leave?

Local currency is easily available from the numerous cash machines/ATMs in all of our starting cities in the region, plus most of the cities and major towns which we visit. This is the easiest and most convenient way to access local cash – just make sure you notify your bank of your travel plans before you leave.

Travel hack alert! It’s a good idea to have a small amount of cash ($USD, GBP or local currency) with you on arrival in case of emergencies.

Tipping is expected for quite a few things in the Middle East and North Africa but you only need to give a small amount and your Trip Leader will advise you what is appropriate. In true Topdeck style, your Topdeck Crew will not ask for a tip at the end of your trip – as per our ‘No Tipping Policy’.

Do I need a visa?

For all non-restricted nationalities (please check the eligibility for your passport) we will obtain a free visa on your behalf. To obtain your free visa on arrival in Amman, we will require your full passport, flight, and insurance details no later than two weeks before arriving to ensure our representative can meet you before immigration. If you do not provide us with these details, we will be unable to obtain a free visa for you and you will be subject to paying the full amount on arrival.

Please note: Topdeck does not include visa fees for Israel. Please check the individual entry requirements for your passport.

Please note: Individuals departing Jordan via land at all border crossings will incur a departure tax charged by Jordanian border control of approximately 10 Jordanian Dinars.

What’s the food like?

Breakfasts are included every day on most trips (except on the first morning). A typical breakfast may consist of cereals with milk or yogurt, bread, a mixture of local dishes and a range of spreads with fruit juice, tea or coffee to drink. It is rare to get a hot breakfast, though on some occasions there may be some hot food available as well. Included evening meals are in local restaurants or your place of accommodation. In most cases, table water is provided with the meals, and if you wish to purchase additional drinks you can do so at your own expense.

Will my trip be impacted by Ramadan festivities?

As many Middle Eastern countries are of Islamic faith, it is important to remember that lots of restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating on reduced hours during Ramadan. As a result, some optional and included activities on your trip may be affected. Ramadan, which takes place in either April, May or June, is an incredibly important and sacred month for Muslims. When equipped with some basic knowledge, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in this special tradition and experience all its highlights.

TRAVELLING TO AFRICA?

What is a Topdeck Africa trip like?

Take an Explorer trip and make it Africa. The result? An adventure designed to help you see, do and experience more. With a small group of ready-made trip mates who are just as pumped for it as you are – plus a knowledgeable local guide and a private chef – a more intimate, personalised travel experience WILL be yours.

How many people will be on my Topdeck Africa trip?

Just 21 passengers. But on the average trip you can expect closer to 15.

What's the accommodation like?

Camping vs Accommodated – the decision is yours. Either way, you’ll get the same unforgettable experience – with the same unforgettable people. The campsites we stay at are remote and wild enough to give you that authentic experience but still have enough creature comforts. In certain locations our trips feature included hostel upgrades and we also use comfortable hotel accommodation in Zanzibar.

Choose to camp and you’ll stay in a two-person dome tent (complete with comfy mattress). Your expert Crew will give you the low-down on how to erect your tents so even the novice campers will be popping them up and pulling down in no time!

Opt for Accommodated and you’ll bed down in a mix of hotels, game reserve cabins, lodges and campsites. BUT in the Serengeti National Park you’ll be joining your happy-camper counterparts for a night under the stars – due to the remote location of our night’s stay.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

Yes! If you’ve booked our Camping option, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag.

All Topdeckers booked on our Sun & Safari trip will also need to bring a sleeping bag for two nights of sleeping under the stars inthe Serengeti. Sweet!

Where will my trip depart from? What time does it start?

Detailed information on your trip start and end point can be found on your My Topdeck Account or in the documents sent to you prior to departure. If you have any questions, live chat our Customer Service Team and they’ll be able to help!

What's the transport like?

You'll be travelling in one of our state-of-the-art overland safari vehicles. Your overland truck is a rolling home for the duration of your trip. It will keep your belongings safely stowed (in secure lockers big enough for your entire luggage) and your body well-cushioned (thanks to the comfy seats). On top of that, it comes equipped with power points to charge up laptops and cameras so you can plug in and chill out when you need to.

How much time will I spend on the overland truck?

We try to spend as little time in transit as possible so you have more time to enjoy the places you visit (obvs). However, Africa is BIG – so it does take time to get around! Some days will include long hours of driving, BUT it’s a great opportunity to get to know your trip mates, catch up on some zzz’s or take in the jaw-dropping scenery.

Are Topdeck's safaris run responsibly?

We are committed to responsible travel and we make every effort to leave a lasting beneficial impact on the areas and communities we visit.

What’s the food like?

Experiencing all the delights that Africa has to offer can work up a serious appetite. But never fear – all of our trips include a private Chef who'll be cooking up loads of appetising meals, so you'll enjoy yourself on a full stomach! The number of meals included on your trip is displayed on your trip page in the 'What's included' section.

What clothes should I take?

The climate in Africa varies from country to country. Most countries range between hot days and mild nights in the summer months to warm days and cool nights in the winter. Some African countries can get very hot in summer, so lightweight cottons and linens are recommended along with clothing to cover your head and neck and high factor sunblock. If visiting in winter, you will need to bring some warmer clothing for the cool evenings.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring?

This isn’t your usual suitcase-pushing holiday abroad – we’ll mostly be travelling in overland trucks and local ferries. Meaning? Luggage space is limited. Bring a soft bag or backpack vs a hard suitcase. And remember, what you pack is what you lug around (so, pack light).

Each Topdecker is limited to one item of standard size luggage, plus a day pack.

The maximum weight of your main bag must not exceed 44lb/20kg – and the size for all bags must not exceed 65cm x 45cm x 25cm in order to fit in our safari truck lockers. Due to weight regulations, passengers with overweight luggage may be asked to offload the excess on the morning the trip departs (eek).

What currencies will I need?

South Africa – South African Rand (ZAR)

Eswatini – Swazi Lilangeni (SZL)

Lesotho – Basotho Loti (LSL)

Kenya – Kenyan Shilling (KES)

Tanzania – Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)

Do I need to change money before I leave?

Local currency is easily available from the numerous cash machines/ATMs in all of our starting cities in the region, plus most of the cities and major towns which we visit. This is the easiest and most convenient way to access local cash – just make sure you notify your bank of your travel plans before you leave.

Travel hack alert! It’s a good idea to have a small amount of cash ($USD, GBP or local currency) with you on arrival in case of emergencies.

Tipping is expected for quite a few things in Africa but you only need to give a small amount and your Trip Leader will advise you what is appropriate to give. In true Topdeck style, your Crew will not ask for a tip at the end of your trip – as per our ‘No Tipping Policy’.

Do I need a visa?

Visas are not included in your trip price and obtaining the correct visas for your trip is your own responsibility. Many countries in Africa require you to purchase visas before you travel; please ensure you have checked before you travel and obtained all necessary documents.

Do I need special vaccinations?

Please ensure you have obtained any required vaccinations and medications in advance of travel. Many African countries require you to have a yellow fever certificate on entry.

TRAVELLING TO ASIA?

Where will my trip depart from? What time does it start?

Detailed information on your trip start and end point can be found on your My Topdeck Account or in the documents sent to you prior to departure. If you have any questions, live chat our Customer Service Team and they’ll be able to help!

Are arrival airport transfers included?

Sometimes. On our India and Sri Lanka trips, we’ve taken the hassle out of navigating your way to the hotel and included arrival airport transfers in your trip price.

However, things can be pretty spread out in countries like Vietnam and Cambodia – so it does take time to get around! We also can’t control the traffic (sorry, not sorry) – so some days will include long hours of driving. BUT it’s a great opportunity to get to know your trip mates, catch up on some zzz’s or take in the jaw-dropping scenery.

Plus, in Bali and Japan we’ll be travelling like a local – catching bullet trains and local boats where we can.

INDIA: Our domestic flight from Udaipur to Delhi has a capped luggage allowance of 15kgs. Meaning? Keep it light! If you really can’t go without, you can purchase an extra 5kgs at the airport for approximately $45 AUD. Please be aware that power banks cannot be stored in your check-in luggage – you must carry these in your hand luggage instead (otherwise, your checked luggage will not be allowed on the plane).

Please carry a printed copy of your flight details and your e-visa (if applicable) for security checks.

If you require any supporting information for your e-visa, please contact our Customer Service Team.

JAPAN: On our Japan Express and Japan Highlights trips you'll be travelling like a local... by train! This means a bit of walking between stations and hotels so we recommend packing light with a backpack or small case.

Will I need any special clothing?

Whist visiting some destinations, sights and attractions in Asia it is customary to cover your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect. It’s a good idea to pack t-shirts, long pants or long skirts for when this is required. Your Trip Leader will advise you well in advance when you will be required to cover up.

What currencies will I need?

Cambodia – Cambodian Riel (KHR)

Vietnam - Vietnamese Dong (VND)

Indonesia – Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)

Japan – Japanese Yen (JPY)

India – Indian Rupee (INR)

Sri Lanka – Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR)

TRAVELLING TO NORTH AMERICA?

Where will my trip depart from? What time does it start?

Detailed information on your trip start and end point can be found on your My Topdeck Account or in the documents sent to you prior to departure. If you have any questions, live chat our Customer Service Team and they’ll be able to help!

How much time will I spend on the coach?

We try to spend as little time on the coach as possible so you have more time to enjoy the places you visit (obvs). However, the USA and Canada are BIG countries – so it does take time to get around! Some days will include long hours of driving BUT it’s a great opportunity to get to know your trip mates, catch up on some zzz’s or take in the jaw-dropping scenery.

Where will we stop on drive days?

To get from A to B we may spend several hours on the road, but we always break up the journeys with interesting stops along the way. Lunch breaks or scenic stops vary from trip to trip and range from standard commercial service areas to interesting locations such as scenic parks, viewpoints and small cowboy towns!

Do I need to tip?

Fact: tipping is a way of life in America. When dining out or visiting bars, it is courteous to tip the serving staff (who rely on tips to supplement their wages). In a bar, a $2 tip per visit to bar is recommended if you are purchasing 1 or 2 drinks. If you're buying a round for a group, a $3 tip is recommended. If you choose not to tip in a bar, you are likely to cause offence and may struggle to get served again.

In restaurants, a tip of around 15-20% of the bill is advised. A $1 to $2 tip for taxi rides is recommended. And for Topdeck ‘Optional activities’ – a $3 to $5 tip for your guide on each excursion or activity is recommended.

In true Topdeck style, your Topdeck Crew will not ask for a tip at the end of your trip – as per our ‘No Tipping Policy’.

What is the drinking age?

The drinking age in the USA is 21 years. All bars and drinking spots check ID as a matter of routine, either on entry or via the serving staff. For this reason, you should always carry some form of photographic ID (typically your passport) on you if you wish to buy alcohol.

In Canada, the drinking age is 18 in Alberta & Quebec, and 19 in British Columbia & Ontario. Our Canadian Rockies trip visits both Alberta & British Columbia. Our USA & Canada Adventure trip visits both Quebec & Ontario. You should always carry photographic ID (typically your passport) with you if you wish to purchase alcohol.

Travelling to Canada on our Great White North trip? You get an extra suitcase allowance for all your ski gear. Lucky buggers!

What currencies will I need?

USA – US Dollar (USD)

Canada – Canadian Dollar (CAD)

Do I need to change money before I leave?

ATMs are extremely common throughout the USA and Canada so, you’ll be able to withdraw cash from an ATM after arriving in the country.
